Maile Yawata at Artists of Hawaii 2015

Maile Yawata is a local artist who makes her creations out of materials such as clay, different types of paint including acrylic, oil, and casein, and Sculpy. Maile's work is included in the Artists of Hawaii 2015 exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Artists of Hawaii is a juried exhibit held every other year and is highly selective. The jury is made up of the museum director, deputy director, and curator of contemporary art.  Out of 249 applicants, 8 were selected in 2014, a year before the exhibit. During that year, the curator of contemporary art, James Jensen, visited each studio to discuss with the artists their work in progress. Maybe also to make sure they'd have something to hang on the walls come July 2015! The exhibit is open from July 2nd to October 25th. Below are images of Maile's space, especially concentrating on her ceramic work.

Hi Jon Rawlings, have we met? I've taught at HPG and attended some workshops and potlucks. Surely we've been in the same room at least! Thank you for this really nice series of photos showing my work and the brief explanation. I hadn't seen this until today, May 20, 2016.
I hope to meet you sometime and thank you in person!
Also enjoyed your own story of learning to throw. Very humorously and truthfully written.
Aloha, Maile

We must have been in the same room at some point but haven't met. Looking forward to it! I loved the combination of photos and ceramic pieces in your exhibition. My photos were a personal interpretation of what I saw the day I went to the show. I'm only sorry I wasn't able to get a good shot of the first figure on the left. I liked the composition I shot but the lighting and colors were all off and I couldn't get it right. Hope to see you soon! Jon
